How to choose skateboard trucks

A truck is a set of two sets of metal parts that connect decks and wheels. It is important to choose the right trucks because it plays a big role in control, stability, and flexibility. A perfect set or truck will definitely give you an amazing ride. This article is the first part of our skateboard truck buying guide where you will find a complete solution about purchasing a truck. The second part is about skateboard brands actually, and the first part is about the important facts and features of skateboard trucks. To learn more about skateboarding, visit our home page.

Truck components

The structure of the truck is the most complex part of the skateboard and consists of several parts. Depending on the brand, shape slightly different, but the basic configuration of parts is almost the same. And several trucks component can be changed based on your requirements, so I do not know the situation where I only need to replace the parts. I would like to learn to reduce unnecessary expenses.

Baseplate / Pivot Busing

"Baseplate" is the part that connects the truck and the deck. There are four holes through which the hardware can be stacked over the deck. In the middle of the baseplate, there is a large whole for setting the kingpin, and a bushing is plugged in so that the hanger is properly engaged. If you feel that the flexibility of the truck has been compromised, it is also a good idea to exchange only the "pivot bushing" at a lower cost than to replace the entire truck.

Kingpin / Kingpin Nut

"Kingpin" is the largest bolt of skateboard parts that pass through the center of the base plate. It is the most important component of the truck and connects all the major parts with the baseplate. "Kingpin nuts" can be adjusted to suit the situation and to control the flexibility of the truck. The tighter the kingpin you set, the more stable the truck is. And the looser the kingpins are, the more flexibility you will get. However, over-adjusting the kingpin nut makes the kingpin more prone to breakage. So it is better to avoid replacing the bushing and setting the truck often. Kingpin is sold as a set with a kingpin nut.

Cap Washers

The cup washer is a cover that protects the bushing from friction. Generally, washer caps last longer and don’t need replacement frequently.

Bushing / Cone Bushing

The bushing is a rubber part mounted above and below the hanger, which determines the turning flexibility. The longer it is made of rubber, the worn or cracked it becomes, and the more often you’ll need to replace it.

Hanger / Washer / Axle

"Hanger" is the center part of the truck which connects with the baseplate. There is a hard metal core on the both side of the hanger where the wheel is joined. The metal core is called as excel shaft. You should assume that hangers are rarely sold separately. If the hanger breaks or buckles, you have to purchase the entire truck. The top and bottom of the hanger are combined with bushings to allow the truck to move smoothly. The "washer" is a part that is fitted before and after assembling the wheel to the axle. The bearing that is attached to the wheel touches the truck to prevent friction. There is total eight bearings need for a skateboard, two for each axle, two for each truck.

The "axle nut" is the part for securing the wheel to the axle. If you tighten too loosely, the wheel shakes. If tightened too tightly, it will interfere with the rotation of the wheel, so it is best to assemble the wheel so that it moves slightly to both sides. When you buy a truck, it is shipped together, but if it is used for a long time, it will be worn out.

High truck? Low truck?

Trucks usually have three types of heights: Hi, Low, and Mid. First, a high truck will have a higher altitude from the end of the deck to the ground, which will allow higher altitude but will require more power than a low truck. Conversely, a low truck can hit the tail with a weak force, making it easier to pop, but with less height. However, the difference between the height of a low truck and the height of a high truck is very weak. The difference is slightly different depending on the brand, but in most cases, the difference is about 5mm, it can be adapted to at least a few days to a few weeks. If you are learning tricks for the first time, I recommend buying a low truck that is more suitable for practicing ollie.

Size of truck

The size of the truck is divided by the size of the width. First, you need to know the width of the deck to select a truck. Basically, you should not see the hanger when you look bellow by standing on your skateboard. But, It is not good to use a truck that is too small.

You'll be able to choose the right skateboard truck if you follow the tips above. No matter what the brand is, check it thoroughly for flaws before purchasing. If you are interested to know about the popular truck brands, then read our another article about popular skateboard truck brands.
